Make Your Own Macrame Wall Hanging

Creating a macrame wall hanging can be a fun and creative way to add a touch of bohemian decor to your space.

Here's a basic guide to making a simple macrame wall hanging.

Materials Needed
- Macrame cord or rope (cotton, nylon, or other materials)
- Wooden dowel or rod
- Scissors
- Tape measure

Steps:

1. Prepare the dowel

Start by cutting the macrame cord into several pieces of equal length, depending on how long you want the wall hanging to be. The number of cords you cut will determine the width of the hanging. Fold each cord in half and loop it over the wooden dowel, securing it with a lark's head knot. You can use as many cords as you want for the width of the hanging.

2. Create the base

Use a simple square knot to create a row of knots across the cords below the wooden dowel. To make a square knot, take four cords. Using the first two cords, make a backward "4" shape over the second two cords. Then, pass the ends of the first two cords through the loop created and pull tight. Repeat this process across the row.

3. Continue knotting

You can create various patterns using different knots such as square knots, half-square knots, or diagonal double half-hitch knots. Experiment with alternating patterns to create texture and design in your wall hanging. You can find detailed knotting instructions and patterns in macrame tutorials available online.

4. Shape and design

As you progress, you can create shapes, fringes, or incorporate beads and other decorative elements into your design. Be creative and experiment with different techniques to achieve the desired look.

5. Finish the bottom

Once you've reached the desired length, finish the bottom by trimming the cords to create a straight or angled fringe. You can leave them as they are or add decorative knots or beads to the fringe.

6. Hang the wall hanging

Once you've completed your design, remove the wooden dowel and attach a string or additional cord to each end of the dowel for hanging. Hang your macrame wall hanging using a nail or hook on the wall.

Remember, practice makes perfect with macrame, and there are endless possibilities for creating unique and beautiful designs. Feel free to explore different patterns and techniques to customize your wall hanging according to your taste and style.
